Day of the Dead 2024

HARVEST SEASON HEARTS

SPLIT OPEN, RED SQUIRREL DEAD

ON A SUN SEED BED

Looking up from my writing on the morning of September 4th, I saw magpie picking at a carcass below the bird feeder. I went outside to see who was dead and found red squirrel’s seemingly unscathed drenched body sprawled belly up on a bed of sunflower seed hulls. Another red squirrel still visits regularly as life carries on at the feeder. And I miss someone—s.
